I am a student and a member of VANK
living in South Korea. VANK is a non-governmental organization
and also a voluntary organization. VANK consists of
elementary, middle and high school students who provide
correct information about Korea to international textbook
publishing companies and publishers.

We, Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK), began
an aggressive letter and email writing campaign in the
late 1990s, all in an effort to get the world, especially
map makers, travel guides and geography web sites to
include the East Sea, whenever the long-established
Sea of Japan is found in print.

Therefore, Now the world's largest commercial mapmaker, National
Geographic, worldatlas.com, and the travel guidebook,
Lonely Planet Publication, use the name 'East
Sea.' They told us that VANK claim that the East
Sea has as much historical precedent as the Sea of Japan
has worked well, as major textbook and map publishers,
educational web sites, along with this site and other
reference materials now include the East Sea.

Using a proper name for the body of water between
the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago is
not simply a question of changing the name of a geographical
feature. It is rather a part of national effort by the
Korean people to erase the legacy of Japanese Imperialism
and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from
it.

Unfortunately, when a country dominates
another, the first thing lost is the truth.
It is equally true that those who control a country
also control its history. Such was the case of the
East Sea, when it was occupied by Japan
(1910-1945). From that time on, Korea had no chance
at all of showing to the world "the East
Sea". Japan now controlled the country,
so it also changed the East Sea to Sea of Japan. The Japanese completely rewrote The
East Sea , and even Koreans themselves
were forced to learn a very distorted version. Korean
historians had not yet had the chance to publish works
about Korea in English and, when they finally did, the
Japanese versions had become firmly entrenched in Western
societies.

We know that you, UNGEGN, endeavor in many ways to solve
the problem of geographical names lacking standardized
forms,
Especially, I think that technical
recommendations on standardizing geographical names
by UNGEGN contribute greatly to
many textbook publish companies, and society
and geography textbooks published by them contribute
greatly to many students of world understanding
of other countries cultures

this opportunity and then The East Sea will fully be

VANK stands for - ¡®Voluntary Agency
Network of Korea¡¯, a civilian international exchange
association in Korea. We work for the promotion of Korea's
image all over the world by Internet. VANK was established
in 1999 by volunteers, and now has over 12,000 members.
Using email or internet we serve as cyber travel guides
to overseas Koreans and foreigners so that they can
understand Korean culture and language better, and at
the same time we hope we build international friendships.
VANK is a great chance for those who are interested
in Korean language, arts, cultural education, history,
geography, social studies, sciences to learn about our
country, and we also welcome with open arms anyone just
wanting to make Korean friends!
