To whoever it may concern at the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO): I strongly urge that your organization carefully consider the case of naming the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan. It is improper to use the name of a specific country for a sea surrounded by several nations. As you are probably aware, in a case when countries directly involved cannot agree on the name of a region shared between them, we have to find a new name by mutual agreement. And before coming to the agreement, we have to use both names presented by the countries. The name 'Sea of Japan' must be corrected because the name gained international recognition as a result of Japanese imperialism in the 1920s, when Korea was under the rule of Japan. Korea had no diplomacy power, and Japanese imperialism exploited the opportunity. For your reference, many authoritative institutions acknowledged their errors of stating only the `Sea of Japan’ in their maps and had changed the naming to 'East sea / sea of Japan' as a result of our demands.
