I am a student and a member of VANK
living in South Korea. VANK is a non-governmental organization
and also a voluntary organization. VANK consists of
elementary, middle and high school students who provide
correct information about Korea to international textbook
publishing companies and publishers.
저는 반크 회원으로 한국에 살고
있는 학생입니다. 반크는 비정부기구로서 외국 교과서와
출판사를 대상으로
한국에 대한 바른 정보를 전하고자 초.중.고 학생들로 구성된
자원봉사 단체입니다.
Korea has 5,000 years history, well-matched
cultural heritage and has accomplished high-speed economic
growth, but these facts have not been introduced well
yet in textbooks and publications all over the world.
Especially, Korea’s developed image was introduced
to the world through mass communications, hosting the
1988 Seoul Olympic Games, 2002 FIFA Korea/Japan World
Cup very successfully but Korean information introduced
in international textbooks is still insufficient or
incorrect.
제가 사는 한국은 5천년의 역사와
그에 걸맞는 문화유산이 있고 고속 경제성장을 이룬 나라지만
전 세계 교과서와 출판물에는 아직 이런 한국의 모습이
잘 알려져 있지 않습니다. 특히 1988년 서울 올림픽, 2002년
FIFA 한일 월드컵을 성공적으로 개최하여 전 세계 매스컴을
통해 한국의 발전된 모습이 소개되었지만, 외국 교과서에
소개된 한국 이해자료는 여전히 미흡한 수준입니다
First of all most Korean information
in international textbooks has been delivered to the
world through Japan or China not directly from Korea.
Good examples are describing the ‘East Sea’ as the
‘Sea of Japan’, world 13th economic board of trade
Korea as a farming country that is underdeveloped, 5,000
years of Korean history as 2,000 years history and describing
Korea as the vassal state of China and Japan.
무엇보다도 전 세계 외국 교과서에
소개된 한국에 대한 이해자료는 한국에서 직접 전해진 것보다는
일본이나 중국을 통해 왜곡되어 전해진 것이 많습니다.
대표적인 사례가 동해를 일본해라 표기하고, 세계 13대
경제 통상대국으로 성장한 한국을 후진국형 농경국가로,
한국의 5천년 역사를 2천년 역사로, 한국을 중국과 일본의
속국이라 서술한 내용입니다.
These inaccuracies regarding Korea in
international textbooks were reflected from the contents
in Japanese textbooks without any verification, which
were delivered to the world by Japanese scholars after
Japanese colonial rule of Korea from 1910 to 1945.
한국에 대한 외국 교과서의 이런
잘못된 내용은 일본 교과서에 실린 한국 소개 내용을 그대로
반영한 것으로서 1910년부터 1945년까지 일본이 한국을
강제 점령한 이후에 일본 학자들에 의해 전 세계에 전해진
내용입니다.

to understand other cultures and countries meeting the
21st century (globalization, information-oriented are
going on in 21st century). Especially, I think that
society and geography textbooks published by your company
contribute greatly to many students understanding of
other countries cultures.
저희는 귀 출판기관에서 세계화,
정보화가 진행되는 21세기를 맞이하여 다른 문화와 국가를
이해하기 위한 여러 가지 노력을 하고 있는 것으로 알고
있습니다. 특히 귀 출판기관에서 발행하는 사회 및 지리
교과서는 귀 나라의 많은 학생들이 다른 나라, 다른 나라의
문화를 보다 정확히 이해할 수 있도록 많은 기여를 하고
있다고 생각합니다.

We have detailed educational and comprehensive
data regarding Korean history and culture, as well as
digital pictures, which are all collected by VANK members
(10,000 elementary, middle and high school voluntary
student members). And we can provide you with this information
willingly by post or internet without any cost.

VANK’s desires are that students all
over the world can experience correct Korean history
and culture by our voluntary effort, taking this opportunity
and then sharing dreams and friendship with the rest
of the world.

VANK stands for - ‘Voluntary Agency
Network of Korea’, a civilian international exchange
association in Korea. We work for the promotion of Korea's
image all over the world by Internet. VANK was established
in 1999 by volunteers, and now has over 12,000 members.
Using email or internet we serve as cyber travel guides
to overseas Koreans and foreigners so that they can
understand Korean culture and language better, and at
the same time we hope we build international friendships.
VANK is a great chance for those who are interested
in Korean language, arts, cultural education, history,
geography, social studies, sciences to learn about our
country, and we also welcome with open arms anyone just
wanting to make Korean friends!
