Happy Lunar Year! - Korea's Seollal Holiday

Saehae bok mani badeseyo! Not four weeks into 2009 and here we are celebrating New Year's again. What's that about? In this case, it's about Seollal, also known as the Lunar New Year or the Korean New Year. The Lunar New Year is celebrated simultaneously in China and various East Asian nations that have traditionally been part of the Chinese sphere of influence, including Vietnam, Mongolia and, of course, Korea.

In Korea, it makes up one of the two major holidays of the year, along with Chuseok in the autumn. The New Year's on Jan 1 is of course widely celebrated, but it does not compare to the festivities that take place during Seollal, or to the nationwide mobilization of Koreans as they take to the road to join their families to welcome 2009 for second time.
