All Men have to Serve in the Army
2003-05-13

Photo from the Korean Army basic training academy

Hi, I'm Lee Hyun-sun who lives in Seoul. I study English Literature in Duk-Sung Women's university now. My English name is Julia.

Today, I introduce about Korea's military service. In Korea, if he is not sick, he must join the army (or navy, air force, marine corps and so on). Most of the men who go to the army are in early twenties. Once he goes to the army, he can't write a letter and can't use phone for about 1 month. (In Korean Army they have 6 weeks basic training) And then he can take leave for 4 days 5 nights after 100 days from his enlistment day, so normally we call that leave ¡°100-day Leave¡±. The period of military service is 26 months, at this term many sweethearts break up. Actually, my boyfriend serves in the army now. I miss him very much.
