In Korean history "King Gwanggaeto the Great (A.D.
391~413)" is known as the "Great Expander"
who covered Northeast Asia, so he also known as the
"Master of Manchuria".
His name "King Gwanggaeto the Great" means
"the king who expanded the country's territory".
He opened the golden age of Goguryeo launching a military
expedition to expand his territory. He won a succession
of notable victories. In the west he occupied Liaotung,
which was the focal point of a fierce struggle between
Goguryeo and both Chinese and non-Chinese states. He
subdued the Sushen people (a Tungusic tribe ot Goguryeo's
northeast area). To the south he attacked Baekje, extending
Goguryoe's frontier to Han river area, he also sent
troops to Silla and crushed a Wae (Japanese force) who
was attacking Silla.
And he was the first King to adopt the Chinese custom
of naming his reign-period. The Chinese were in the
habit of not only giving posthumous titles to their
emperors, but also naming the period during which a
monarch reigned. King Gwanggaeto the Great instituted
his own era name "Yeongnak (Eternal Rejoicing)"
making Goguryeo equal status with China. His monument
still stands at Gungnaeseong on the upper Yalu (the
old Goguryeo's capital). It is recorded that he conquered
64 fortresses and 1,400 towns during his reign. He was
the great king in Korean history who commanded Northeast
Asia showing a progressive spirit of Korean people.
