From ancient times with its favorable geographical situation, Korea has been a maritime country. In Silla period Jang Bo Go (A.D. ?~846) secured maritime trade, he was the most successful leader in the East Asian maritime trade industry in the 9th century. Jang established "CheonghaeJin" (a military and administrative base) in Wando island. CheonghaeJin was not only a strategic alliance system with Silla Dynasty to sweep away pirates but also a base to achieve his private goal to obtain the absolute commandership of East Asia's maritime trade. His giant network was based on CheoghaeJin in Silla, Hakata in Japan, Cheoksanpo and Yangjoo in Tang (China) and it promoted international maritime trade not only triangular trade among Korea (Silla), China and Japan but also the trade between the South and North areas within China, as well as merchants from Persia and Southeast Asia. At that time he made Korean peninsula the economic center of Northeast Asia controlling Northeast Asian maritime trade.

If Jang Bo Go had controlled Northeast Asian maritime trade 1,200 ago, Korean shipbuilding industry controlling the world's shipbuilding market now. Korea is a leading shipbuilding country with the productivity improvement and the upgrading of production technology. According to the KOSHIPA (The Korea Shipbuilder's Association) data, new orders Korean shipbuilders received in 2002 amounted to 7.6 million CGT (Compensated Gross Tonnage). Korean shipbuilders built 6.8 million CGT in 2002 and as of the end of 2002 the order books recorded 17.1 million CGT. And all 3 major shipyards are located in Korea. They covers over 50% of the new orders
