Korea is taking a superior
position in the IT industry such as the Broadband Internet
Services, TFT-LCDs and mobile phones and semiconductors
and others. Korea has been the largest DRAM manufacturing
country in the world since 1998, and has known as the
second largest manufacturing country in total memory
semiconductor production.
Korea ranks 5th highest among the 30 OECD countries
following Ireland, Norway, Sweden ad Canada in the number
of Internet users per 100 people. 2001 OECD research
shows Korea is in the first place in terms of the penetration
rate of broadband internet. According to the OECD research,
the ratio of the broadband internet subscribers to the
total population in Korea was 13.9 to every 100 person.
It is a remarkably high figure compared to 3.2 of the
U.S., 0.8 of the E.U. and 0.9 of the Japan. As a unique
internet culture, "PC room" (or "Internet
cafe") shows that you can easily access to the
internet in Korea and internet is already become a necessary
thing for daily life. The internet is a part of Korean
culture and life like internet banking, internet shopping,
online stock trading, online education.
Mobile phones, as one of the major IT items, recorded
13.64 trillion won in total production and 7.2 billion
US Dollars in exports for 2001. By commercializing the
CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology for
the first time in the world, Korea secured an unrivaled
position in the CDMA mobile phone market. By integrating
the newest technological developments, such improved
functions used in Korea for mobile phones as color display,
wireless access to the web, location service, camera
phone service, movie play, digital payment and various
wireless Internet platforms.
